Top 5 Tight Ends in The NFL 2020

The Tight End can be seen as the hybrid offensive player. Tight Ends need to be athletic enough to be able to run out and catch passes like receivers but also capable of blocking any defensive player they are assigned to. Our list has shown that the best tight ends in the NFL are reflective of the relevancy of the position in today’s game.

Methodology

We asked every host of a podcast and every writer on the blog platform to send us their list of top tight ends. After receiving the individual rankings, we scored every tight end based on the rankings. While some of the people we asked in the survey refused to comment, the majority of the RTF members gave us their rankings allowing us to have a clear and unbiased result. Below are our top five tight ends.

5. Darren Waller

Waller came out of nowhere last season after four years having trouble just getting on to the field and became Derek Carr’s favorite target throughout the season. The Raiders were looking for a target to help out Derek Carr and with the Antonio Brown fallout, the Raiders were clearly lacking play-makers. Darren Waller became one of the league's elite tight ends and is destined to only get better.

4. Mark Andrews

In the same draft that the Ravens drafted Lamar Jackson, they also landed Mark Andrews, a tight end out of Oklahoma who caught passes from the number one overall pick in Baker Mayfield. Mark Andrews has emerged as one of Lamar Jackson’s top targets and one of the best tight ends in the NFL in only his first two seasons. With the Ravens trading away Hayden Hurst in the offseason, Mark Andrews is going to be asked to carry more of the load from the tight end position this season as the Ravens look to be one of the favorites to compete for the Super Bowl.

3. Zach Ertz

Zach Ertz headlines a Stanford pipeline of tight ends that are making an impact for their respective teams in the NFL. Ertz came into the league in 2013 and has made it to three Pro-Bowls and helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl since. In recent years the Eagles offense hasn’t given their quarterbacks a strong supporting cast, Zach Ertz without fail has been the Eagles top offensive asset. The Eagles offense looks to be better this season and Ertz still looks to be top target in the offense this season.

2. George Kittle

George Kittle plays football like a man among boys. George Kittle was seen as impossible to tackle and incredibly difficult to guard. Kittle has also established himself as one of the best blockers in the NFL as the 49ers boasted one of the best running games in the league last season. When Rob Gronkowski initially retired in 2019, everyone was looking for the next Gronk, it appears we found him in George Kittle, a man who has the personality and ability of a Gronk in his prime.

1. Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce has emerged as the league's best tight end. In one of the league's best offenses, Kelce is still the top weapon and can’t be guarded. He is bigger than any defensive back and is faster than most linebackers, Kelce is also bigger than most linebackers which makes him one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL as well. Kelce is at the peak of his career and shows no signs of slowing down, as the most ideal tight end, Kelce is destined to help Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense for years to come.
